Established in 1962, Mabati Rolling Mills Limited (MRM) stands as the flagship entity within the esteemed Safal Group and holds the distinction of being the largest steel manufacturer in Kenya. From our inception in Mariakani, Mombasa, MRM has consistently led the way in innovation within Africa’s building solutions sector.

Additionally, we made history by pioneering the manufacture of Coated Steel on the continent, utilizing a revolutionary patented Aluminum-Zinc alloy. This cutting-edge technology, branded ZincAl, is globally recognized for its ability to significantly enhance the service life of steel products. Licensed to the Safal Group by BIEC International, ZincAl represents a hallmark of quality and durability.

Operating from our integrated Coated Steel facility in Mariakani, we produce a wide range of world-class Coated and Painted Coated Steel products. These products serve as the foundation for a diverse array of prestigious building solutions manufactured in our facilities across Kenya.

To ensure widespread accessibility and personalized service, we have strategically positioned service centers in key locations such as Nairobi (off Mombasa Road) and Nairobi Industrial area (Ol Kalou Road), Thika, Kisumu, Nakuru, Eldoret, Mombasa, Kisii, Meru, and Nyeri. Additionally, we have established showrooms in Ngong, Kiambu, Busia, Bungoma, Chuka, Diani, Westlands, Naivasha, Narok, Migori, and other upcoming locations. These showrooms not only showcase our innovative steel and building solutions but also offer tailored assistance to discerning customers.

Complementing our showroom presence, we have developed an extensive distributor network spanning Kenya. This network ensures prompt deliveries and product availability, further solidifying our commitment to customer satisfaction and market accessibility.

We are more than roofing solutions. In addition to our roofing products, we have a plant in Nairobi Industrial area (Ol Kalou Road) dedicated to offering a comprehensive range of mild steel solutions tailored to various industries. Our mild steel solutions are versatile and applicable for fabrications, agriculture, borehole solutions, and construction projects, providing reliable and durable solutions across multiple sectors.

Furthermore, our MRM subsidiary, Safal Building Systems (SBS), offers an array of smart steel pre-engineered services in building solutions. These services are cost-effective, durable, and completed in record time, ready for immediate use.

Our History

60’s

First to introduce and use sheet to sheet technology in roofing material production

1982

Commissioning of the Hitachi 4 Hi – Cold Rolling Mill, in Mariakani, at that time this was a remote part of the country. This Cold Rolling Mill was the first of its kind in the region.

1989

Introduces Colour Coating Technology to produce colored roofs in the market. This added protection and aesthetic value to the coated steel, giving a fade-free warranty of upto 15 years.

2001

The ﬁrst in Africa to produce the world’s leading patented Aluminum-Zinc coated steel (Zincal©) branded as Dumuzas©, on unpainted rooﬁng. Offering better heat reflectivity which results in cooler interiors, making it the most preferred brand for Kenya’s Coastal Region.

2004

First to launch steel rooﬁng tiles sold as Versatile© brand. A beautiful and prestigious lightweight tile-like roofing sheet marketed as a premium brand for the discerning user.

2016

Commission of new color coating line. This increased capacity and capability to produce at world class standards thereby ring-fencing our customers who have become increasingly aware of good quality.

Safal Group

The Safal Group is Africa’s largest producer of steel roofing and sheeting and was the first producer of Aluminium Zinc coated steel on the continent.With over 36 businesses, and insights gathered over 50 years, it has remained at the forefront in developing and providing products that lead the industry.

The outputs of more than 30 roof manufacturing operations make it the largest producer of metal roof sheeting in Africa. To complement its roofing brands, specialist products have been developed by the Safal Group – such as fastener products, steel pipes and hollow sections, and other value-added accessories for the building industry.

The Safal Group lays great emphasis on being a socially responsible corporate citizen. Its focus is primarily on the communities in which it operates and particularly those who are most affected by poverty and social disadvantages.
