For example, a 150m² roof receiving 150mm of rainfall: 150 × 150 × 0.8 = 18,000 litres

A smaller 90m² roof receiving 80mm of rainfall: 90 × 80 × 0.8 = 5,760 litres is enough to fill a 5,000-litre tank, provided your gutters and downpipes can capture and transfer the water efficiently.

Tank capacity and gutter capacity need to be considered together. There is little benefit in installing a large tank if your roof and gutter system cannot move enough water into it.

The right tank depends on your household size, daily water consumption, available roof area and how much water you want to store between rainfall events.
